RED SOX NEWS & LINKS: SOX ACQUIRE JAMES PAXTON IN TRADE WITH DODGERS

Ladies and gentlemen, your big trade deadline acquisition: Triston Casas! He likely won’t be the only addition to the Red Sox this week, but it is probably true that Breslow won’t reel in a player as talented as Trizzton. Speaking on the radio yesterday, Breslow reported that Casas is finally taking batting practice as he recovers from his early season rib injury. A rehab stint may be right around the corner. (Lauren Campbell, MassLive)

Well, would you look at that! Triston Casas definitely won’t be the only addition to the Red Sox this week, because the moment I finished typing that sentence some breaking news arrived via the tubes:

Welcome back, Big Maple! We don’t yet know the return, but given that Paxton was just DFA’d by the Dodgers to make room for the returns of Clayton Kershaw and Tyler Glasnow, it won’t be significant. Early reports are that a player currently in the Sox Dominican academy will be going the other way.

The Paxton trade is a good, low-cost move for a veteran arm who can give you innings either as a starter or in the bullpen, but here’s hoping this isn’t the last move they make. As Craig Breslow laid out, the primary goal is to add a right-handed bat. (Scott McLaughlin, WEEI)

But what about the other side of the ball? As the series loss to the Rockies showed, the Sox should still be looking to improve the infield defense. (Julian McWilliams, Boston Globe)

For all the griping we do about the Sox issues in the field, though, we must at least acknowledge that there’s been improvement there. Some credit should go to the coaching staff there, including Cora, the man Sam Kennedy calls “the face of the franchise.” (Chris Cotillo, MassLive)

Let’s face it, though: you’d really prefer your face of the franchise be a player. To that end, Raffy Devers should get the title, and not only because his bad-ball hitting is so fun to watch. (Julian Benbow, Boston Globe)
